If you live in Peel Region and have been facing a rat problem, there is good news for you: you can receive up to $200 from the Region. This short guide explains how the rat subsidy works, who it helps and what homeowners in Mississauga and Brampton can do to keep rats away.

What the Peel Region rat subsidy offers
Peel Region started a pilot project to help residents fight rat infestations. In its own words, the Region describes the program this way:
“The Residential Rat Control Subsidy Pilot Program helps residents with the costs to improve rat issues on the exterior of their residential properties. Interior issues are not eligible for subsidy.
The program reimburses eligible residents for 50% of the cost in hiring of Region of Peel approved pest control vendor up to a maximum of $200 per calendar year per residential Peel address.
The program has been extended until November 30, 2022.”
In short, the Region pays half of the bill when you hire an approved vendor, and the payment stops at $200 a year for each address. Only the outside of your home counts. For example, a problem in your yard, shed or fence line qualifies, but a problem inside your kitchen does not.
Who can use the program
The subsidy is for residential addresses in Peel Region, which covers Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon. Because the limit applies per address, each home can claim its own share. However, you must use a vendor from the Region’s approved list. If you hire a company that is not on that list, you may not get your money back.

Why rats matter to homeowners
Rats are more than a nuisance. They chew wires, insulation and wood, and they can damage a garage or a deck over time. A pest control company can remove rats, but the best long-term fix is to make your property less inviting. Here are some simple habits that help:
- Keep garbage and green bin lids closed tightly, and store bins away from the house.
- Clean up fallen fruit, bird seed and pet food in the yard.
- Trim shrubs and move woodpiles away from walls and fences.
- Seal gaps around pipes, vents and the foundation.
- Fix leaky outdoor taps, since rats need water as well as food.
